There are certain materials not accepted at local landfills, either because there are already disposal programs in place for these items, or because they are hazardous to waste collection workers and the public. Materials banned from disposal facilities include:
- Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW's)
HHW's are hazardous materials that can leach into the ground and contaminate the soil and ground water. These materials are dangerous to people, pets and the environment. Some examples of HHW's are solvents, oil, pesticides, paints and cleaners. See the Regional District landfill information website for more information.
- Asphalt & Concrete - View the Commercial Recycling Directory section on Construction, Demolition and Renovation for disposal options
- All paper and Cardboard - MUST BE SEPARATED. Loads containing these items are subject to fines.
- Drywall/Gypsum - MUST BE SEPARATED. Loads containing these items are subject to fines. Special bins are located at landfill sites for Drywall/Gypsum (tipping fee of $145/tonne applies).
